Mkomazi NP

WELCOME TO MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK

Mkomazi National Park

Mkomazi National Park is only four miles from the Elephant Motel and Same town center.

It takes approximately 15 minutes by car to reach the main entrance where you can obtain information or guidance at the information center. Note: All Tanzanian National Parks have entrance fees.

The Park is over 3200 square kilometers and borders Kenya’s Tsavo National Park. The name comes from the Pare tribe's word for “scoop of water”, since the area can be very dry outside of the rainy season. Mkomazi is of great biological significance, representing species and ecosystems not commonly found in Tanzania. Especially early in the morning and at the end of the day, many animals can be spotted: giraffes, elephants, hartebeests, zebras, buffaloes, ostriches and many, many beautiful birds! In fact, it is famous for its incredible variety of birds.

The park has also developed a breeding program for the rare black rhino. You cannot normally visit the breeding area, but an observation area has been developed for very close viewing of their rhinos in one of the park’s special vehicles for an additional fee, which helps support their breeding program.

As a new National Park, Mkomazi has not yet been discovered by a great number of tourists, which gives you the feeling of being the only one around. The park can be visited by car, but you can also do walking safaris, climb the mountains surrounding the reserve, or you can even camp in the park! For all these activities, contact the information center at the main entrance.
