Mkomazi National Park
Mkomazi National Park is about four miles from the Elephant Motel and Same town center. It takes approximately 15 minutes by car to reach the main entrance where you can obtain information or guidance at the information center. Entrance fee is $20 U.S. per person.
The Park is about 3000 square kilometers and borders the Kenya Tsavo National Park. Mkomazi is of great biological significance, representing species and ecosystems not commonly found in Tanzania. Especially early in the morning and at the end of the day, many animals can be spotted: giraffes, elephants, hartebeests, zebras, buffaloes, ostriches and many, many beautiful birds! Even the rare black rhino can be spotted here as they were introduced from South Africa for breeding! You cannot visit the breeding area, so do obtain special information on this first.
As a new National Park, Mkomazi has not yet been discovered by a great number of tourists, which gives you the feeling of being the only one around. The park can be visited by car, but you can also do walking safaris, climb the mountains surrounding the reserve, or you can even camp in the park! For all these activities, contact the information center at the main entrance.
